Indecision…or Fear to make choices

Does it take hours for you to decide which pastry to buy at the Bakery?  And do you feel torn apart when you have a choice to make: for instance deciding which studies to do, or which job offer to accept?

… If the answer is YES, then welcome to my world!

But the good news is, there are a few tips that might help you put things a bit in perspective:

  1. First of all, the choice is YOURS (not anybody else’s), so as much as you are going to want to ask other people’s advice, trust your instinct! And always listen to your heart, because you only live once, so make each moment count!
  2. Choices are a reflection of what you want, or what is best for you at a given point in time, so it is normal to change your mind later on. Life is not a predefined path, but it is rather one that you need to invent everyday
  3. Some choices are not important, or I shall say less important than others. For example, choosing between one desert or another is less important than choosing to donate your organs or deciding whether or not to place your ageing Mom in a retirement home.

Once you have these pieces of advice in mind, try to practice making choices every day.

Just make a choice and stick to it.

For example, if you don’t know whether or not you should buy tickets to go see a friend abroad for the week end, ask yourself what is truly at stake? And the answer is most probably “Nothing”. If you spend a bit more money on that particular week end, it’s not the end of the world! And spending quality time with your friends is so important! So just go for it…

Sometimes it is not worth spending hours trying to decide something that has absolutely no crucial importance whatsoever on your life…

So once you start making small choices, practice making more important choices: for instance when deciding between one job and another: weigh the pros and cons, but most importantly, listen to your heart rather than apply some calculated thinking process.

The more you practice, the better you will feel in your everyday life as you realize that nothing is a stake when you make a choice. That chocolate cake will always be available at your local Bakery shop, so go for the lemon tart! It won’t hurt you for once!
